HMP & YOI Stirling
Wall graphics and cut out weathered steel to bring the outside in.
The Scottish Prison Service built the HMP & YOI Stirling facility in Stirling to provide a dedicated environment for women, that doesn’t feel institutional or threatening. The facility focuses on therapy, education, and recovery, with services that are trauma-informed.
Internal experiential graphics and exterior artwork were created to integrate with the building and site and promote a sense of calm. The theme of ‘bringing the outside in’ was developed that makes connections to the natural world beyond the facility environment – our aim being to promote mental well-being and foster positive change. Research confirms that exposure to nature helps decrease our stress and anxiety levels and that even just looking at pictures of plants and trees can help lower blood pressure and improve a person’s mood.
